Autism Information Thoughts
Mood:  bright
Topic: Autism Info

Hi all,

I don't recall if I mentioned this in an earlier blog but I subscribe to Google Alerts for autism... in my in-box, at least twice a day I receive an Alert with two to five different stories/blogs about autism. None of them are earth-shattering; generally, they are local news items about a community holding a fund-raiser for a particular family, a local school program, a blog from a parent about travelling with her child, and so forth.

Not earth-shattering, but important: keeping me connected to the hearts and minds of families living with a child or two on the spectrum. That's what I value the most -- the connection to the families, to the children. Yes, I  know as a consultant I have to be "in the know" about important educational interventions, IEP processes and so forth, but what matters to my heart is the connection to families. This is what keeps me going, and is basic to the work that I do.

For me, it's all about relationships, connectedness, being present to the families I work with. It's not that I 'sell' a particular technique, but that I can use the techniques in relationship to the children and their families. At least, that's what I strive to do in my consulting. What matters is the child, the best education s/he can receive, the best in-home program, the best home/school relationship. If I can guide that, then I have done my job.
